I was reading a newsletter from an organization that will remain unnamed. One of the links in said newsletter was to an article that listed reasons why an author shouldn’t blog.
Well, I was fairly amazed at this contention, especially considering the big old emphasis placed on content marketing and branding in this day and age.
So, here are a few of the
really dumb reasons given why an author shouldn’t blog. I’ll respond to each point and let you decide how you feel about them.
1. You lose too much precious book writing time.
How interesting. As if the only thing an author does is write their books—24/7. In point of fact, authors must shoulder the task of marketing their work and establishing their online brand. In fact, publishers generally won’t
lift a finger do that much for authors in the marketing department, unless you happen to be a big celebrity or whatever gets you a six-figure advance. This, I assure you, doesn’t represent the typical author.
And, even if you are a big-shot type with great promo from your publisher, they are still much happier if you set the stage for them by getting “out there”, so people are aware of your presence before you publish.
And if, like me, you’re an indie author, well … if you don’t do the marketing, who the hell will?
2. Blogging doesn’t sell books.
Well, no—blogging doesn’t sell books. That’s not the point. What blogging does is help establish your voice or presence on the Internet. And, if done well, it can actually provide a service or advice to those who read your blog. Or it can be an informational source on a subject of great interest that you’d like to share with like-minded folks.
Now is that such a bad thing for an author to do? Did it not occur to the blog-basher that maybe blogging might create content that could be parlayed into a book of some sort? Guess not, huh? 🙂
3. Blogging encourages the wrong kind of writing.
